Turning Points: Music - Youth - Diversity

20 - 23 April 2006 Malmö, Sweden

How can music contribute to integrate young people from various cultural backgrounds in the European society?

Subsequent to “Many Musics in Europe”, the EMC keeps the subject of musical diversity in Europe alive. Following the invitation of the Swedish Music Council, this year's special priority was given to musical traditions from immigrants, especially to those of the younger generations. In the conference "Turning Points: Music - Youth - Diversity", members of the EMC presented intercultural music projects showing how young people with minority backgrounds can be included in the cultural dialogue within the European societies.

The issue was also reflected on a political level. In his keynote speech Richard Letts, President of the International Music Council, took a global perspective on musical diversity. Roland Sandberg, director of the Swedish Music Information Centre, provided a statement on author's rights within the latest development of EU legislation.

MIX-IT! Young people with migrant background in music projects

3 to 5 November 2006, Deutsche Welle, Bonn, Germany

The symposium was a follow-up of the 2005 annual conference of the European Music Council.
In a panel discussion and project presentations chances and challenges of musical activities for young people were addressed. Different approaches concerning the support of highly gifted young musicians on the one hand and the support of a wide range of young musicians on the other hand were in the focus. Special attention was paid to the social and cultural background of the youngsters.
Recommendations were formulated in German and English how the inclusion of young people with migrant backgrounds in music projects can be improved. The recommendations will serve as inspiration for cultural operators and address local, national and European authorities. Reactions from various politicians can be downloaded here.
Concerts and events of the Schumann-festival "Endenicher Herbst" provide a musical frame to the Symposium.

You may have a look at the programme of the symposium in German or English.
