Kirsty Robertson - European Choral Association-Europa Cantat

Hello all, my name is Kirsty Robertson and I am a final year Bachelor of Music at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. I have just finished a one-week work placement at the European Choral Association-Europa Cantat which I was the recipient of through the European Music Council's "Make Music Be Heard!" scheme.

When at home in Glasgow, I am an active choral singer rehearsing and performing weekly with the University of Glasgow Chapel Choir (http://www.chapelchoir.org) and Glasgow Madrigirls (http://glasgowmadrigirls.weebly.com). I have also been training as a conductor and vocal leader with choral organisation Sing for Pleasure since February 2011. This training has equipped me with the skills that now enable me to conduct Glasgow University Music Club Choir and Chamber Choir (2 non-auditioned student community choirs) and Happy Voices Children's Choir. Choral singing and management is at the heart of what I do daily and I am extremely keen for it to stay this way once I graduate from university in June this year.

I first saw this work placement advertised on the Creative Scotland website a couple of months ago and am now extremely glad that I decided to apply! I have learned so much from the knowledgeable and patient team here at ECA-CA. Each day I was given a series of different tasks to work on. These included updating the website, culminating information for upcoming festivals and editing the magazine.

Working through each of these tasks provided me with the opportunity to really get to grips with what goes on at ECA-CA and gain a solid understanding of how much background work is involved at large cultural organisation like ECA-CA. Sonja, Anna and Côme made me feel extremely welcome and thoroughly explained various aspects of the organisation and projects that are currently happening including all of the junior and adult festivals, the VOICE project and the Youth Committee.

I can't believe how quickly the week passed and that I've already completed my placement! I am thrilled that I was offered an amazing opportunity like this and would like to take this chance to not only thank the fantastic team at ECA-CA but also the extremely generosity of the European Music Council for transport, hotel and meals for the duration of my stay in Bonn! I am extremely glad that opportunities like this are being made available to young people and that I was able to experience one these placements!
