Access to Music is Digital?
5th European Forum on Music in Riga, Latvia

BONN/ RIGA - 25/02/2015.

Dear Sir or Madam,

the European Music Council, in cooperation with the Latvian National Music Council, is proud to announce the 5th edition of the EMC's European Forum on Music that will take place in Riga. Delegates from all over Europe will come to the Latvian capital on 11 - 14 June 2015.

Rather than just hearing about new technologies, markets or ways on how to improve an artist’s visibility through digital means, participants of the Forum will discuss the synergies between the digital world and ‘real life’. New technologies have greatly improved the way music and culture can be accessed. Today, anyone with a smartphone and an internet connection anywhere in the world can experience a concert by a philharmonic orchestra in London, or view footage of a rock concert in Lisbon. At the same time, concert halls, festivals, arts centres and other institutions or events where people can experience music being performed live, meet and exchange with peers, practice and perform music or otherwise get involved in musical activities in person, are still of the uttermost importance for thriving musical communities and society as a whole. The Forum will look into how new technologies facilitate the work of cultural institutions, how improved access to culture helps raise people’s interest in music, and explore the interplay between the digital world and the one away from keyboard.

The conference will once again take place in the vibrant surrounding of a European Capital of Culture, as Riga has been awarded the title in 2014 with activities still ongoing at the time of the forum. With Latvia also holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union until the end of June 2015, there is arguably no better place to organise this years’ gathering of the European music sector than in Riga. The main venue for the conference is the Latvian Academy of Music, the major institution for higher music education in Latvia, located in the centre of town. This year will also see the introduction of a second venue: to further illustrate the overall topic of the conference, sessions on Saturday will take place at the newly build Cesis concert hall, to which a shuttle service will be provided. The impressive venue, located in the heart of the Vidzeme region one hour outside of Riga, exemplifies how a cultural infrastructure in a rural area can be structured and how well it is received. The final event of the conference will then take place in the courtyard of Cesis castle, a stunning monument of medieval Latvia.

This year, we have introduced an early bird rate. Register by 31 March to benefit from a reduced registration fee.
We will soon announce the first speakers, so make sure to visit the EMC website and facebook page regularly.
