At its last General Conference in 2011, UNESCO proclaimed the 30th April International Jazz Day. For the first celebration in 2012, official events are planned in Paris, in New Orleans and at the headquarters of the UN in New York.

The proclamation of the International Jazz Day by UNESCO is a sign of recognition of jazz as an important historical art form which has contributed to:

•promote intercultural dialogue
•eradicate discrimination
•promote respect for human rights and dignity
•foster gender equality and reinforce the role of youth for social change

As a UNESCO Partner NGO, the International Music Council wishes to participate in the worldwide celebrations through its network of over 1000 organisations in 150 countries. Your national music council can play an important role in these celebrations. Read more.
