Copyright Directive: Vote in the European Parliament on 12 September

On 12 September 2018 the European Parliament will vote on the trilogue-mandate for the Copyright Directive. In July, the European Parliament had rejected the proposal from the Legal Affairs Committee on this issue which led to re-negotiations and a new proposal for the upcoming vote.

Already prior to the decision in July, the EMC addressed Members of European Parliament (MEPs) on this issue in an open letter based on the European Agenda for Music (EAM). The EMC supported the call to MEPs to maintain their strong support for a copyright reform that would enable musicians, music creators and producers obtain better recognition and fairer remuneration for their work in the digital era.

The EMC supports the campaign #EuropeForCreators together with more than 70 other organisations including EMC members AEC, ECSA and REMA. But not only on European level but also national level several campaigns and statements are very vocal in their support for the Copyright Directive. The German Music Council backs a statement by seven German regional music and culture councils which emphasizes that copyright protects cultural diversity and is not censorship. Other national campaigns such as #LoveMusic from the United Kingdom and Save our Sound by the German collecting society GEMA have been very active over the last weeks. The French Association of Authors, Composers and Publishers SACEM published the appeal “L’appel du Palais Royal” and organised a protest in Paris, France on 6 September 2018.
