Building bridges through music education – practice test for the Bonn Declaration
In 2011, the European Music Council developed the Bonn Declaration – a document that seeks to translate the UNESCO Seoul Agenda for the Development of Arts Education to music in Europe. The session will focus on how the Bonn Declaration can be used in different educational settings for music, be it higher music education, music in schools or in community music settings. Does this document address the needs of these sectors and can it be applied for them also for advocacy work?

Robin Osterley is Chief Executive of Making Music, the UK's largest arts umbrella group, which looks after the interests of some 3,000 amateur musical groups. Johannes Johansson is Rector/Vice Chancellor of the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. He is member of the Swedish Royal Academy of Music and Honorary Member of Royal College of Music and Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, UK. 2004-2010 he was President of the Association of European Conservatories (AEC). Johannes Johansson is an internationally renowned composer whose music has been broadcast, recorded and performed worldwide. He publishes widely on music education and contemporary music and is frequently invited speaker internationally. He serves regularly as expert in committees and advisory groups on education, research and culture in many European countries and in the US.
Timo Klemettinen studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Since 1999 he has been working as the Managing Director of the Association of Finnish Music Schools and since 2007 as Chairman of the Finnish Art School Association. He was one of the founders of the Finnish Music Council (since 2008 the Chairman). He is currently the Chairman of the European Music Council, and a member of the Boards of the International Music Council and the European Music School Union.

Helena Maffli gained her music education in the USA (Smith College) and Finland (Sibelius Academy, University of Helsinki) and obtained her piano teacher’s and soloist’s diplomas as well as a university degree in English and Musicology. Since 1999, Helena Maffli is the director of the Music School of Conservatoire de Lausanne, a major Swiss institution. Additional she is a former board member of the Swiss Association of Music Schools and the Swiss National Youth Music Competition. Board member of the European Musicschoolunion since 2005 and the European Music Council since 2010, Helena Maffli was elected president of the EMU in May 2011.
