The Reach of Classical Music on Public Service Media in 2024
The new IMZ Industry Report, The Reach of Classical Music on Public Service Media in 2024, presents the first comprehensive overview of the reach and relevance of audiovisual classical music programming. Drawing on data from 24 public broadcasters across 16 countries, the report examines how classical music is distributed, consumed and produced across linear television and online platforms.
The findings reveal that classical music programming reached more than 157 million viewers in 2024, demonstrating its continued relevance within the audiovisual and cultural landscape. While linear television remains the main channel for reaching large audiences, online platforms are playing an increasingly important role, particularly for thematic channels. Concerts remain the most popular format, followed by documentaries, opera and ballet, with major live events attracting the largest audiences.
At a time when both the media and cultural sectors are facing increasing financial pressure, the report provides valuable evidence of the cultural significance and public reach of classical music programming. It also offers insights that can support advocacy, audience development, programming strategies and future investment in the audiovisual performing arts sector.
